It is located in the municipality of Santa Fe de Mondújar, in the province of Almería, Spain, on a large plateau spur formed by the Andarax River and the Huéchar Rambla, where a city was built with four lines of walls, a necropolis consisting of about 80 collective tombs and a double line of fortifications that visually control access to the entire archaeological complex.

A few remains from the late Bronze Age (approx. 6th century BC) have been found in the municipality; Roman and Visigothic traces are lacking. It can be assumed that Berbers from the Maghreb were the actual founders of the town in the 8th century. The town was reconquered by the Christians at the end of the 15th century (reconquista), but was briefly given as a fief to the last Emir of Granada, Boabdil.
