The Timber Trail

The Timber Trail is a pleasant trail in the Pineridge Natural Area. Nestled in the foothills below the Horsetooth Reservoir, this trail is just south of the Dixon Reservoir, a small, attractive body of water in the Natural Area. Just be aware, the Timber Trail is incredibly popular with mountain bikers so use caution when hiking and be aware of other users.

Cyclists are drawn to Pineridge Natural Area, adjacent to Dixon Reservoir, for its scenic beauty and diverse wildlife. Amidst lush surroundings, cyclists may spot deer, rabbits, and a variety of bird species. Notable views include picturesque landscapes and serene waters, offering a tranquil escape for nature enthusiasts on two wheels.

For those with chunkier tires, you can extend your cycle on the off road trails throughout the area.

Dixon Reservoir

The Dixon Reservoir is a small body of water at the base of the foothills below Horsetooth Reservoir surrounded by a protected Natural Area. The reservoir is a great fishing spot where many fish are stocked annually including pumpkinseed sunfish, bluegill, bass, channel catfish, black crappy, and grass carp. In addition to fishing, you can swim at a small beach on its northwestern shore, take out non-motorized boats, and hike around the reservoir on an attractive 1.8 mile loop, which links up with other trails in the Pineridge Natural Area.

Maxwell Natural Area is a foothills area with views of the surrounding mountains and the city of Fort Collins. Within the park is the 1.5-mile Maxwell Trail that connects with the 9.6-mile Foothills Trail that travels through the city.

There is a large parking lot, picnic tables, bathrooms, and walking access to Sunrise Beach (there is a road down to the beach and pavilions, but there is limited parking and best used for loading and unloading).
