According to legend, in 1017, the Virgin Mary appeared on a hill in Bardo, calling on the inhabitants to repentance and prayer. Around the same time, a statue of the Virgin Mary was discovered in a nearby forest, believed to be the beginning of Marian devotion in this area.

The current Baroque church was built between 1686 and 1704. It was designed by architect J. K. Lautner. Construction took a long time due to wars and financial difficulties.
