Haiku

Highlight • Settlement

This small town, surrounded by its lush tropical environment and flowing waterfalls, is home to local artists, surfers and free spirits. A single grocery store, post office and a few restaurants are perfect for the 8,000 residents who live here. If you're hungry, stop by Aunty Sandy's for a famous freshly baked banana bread slice!

Wai'anapanapa State Park

Highlight • Beach

On our tour around the Maui we stayed at this camp and explored the park.
It is very nice place and doesn't require a lot of time, 1 h max.
Bathrooms are decent and has outdoor showers.
The Most interesting things to explore are: Black sand beach, Blow hole, lava tube and hike over the lava fields.
It is great starting point for your Road to Hana ride in counterclockwise direction. Avoid all the traffic coming from the resorts.
Enjoy and respect!

Secrets! Great, now that I have your attention, Kaihalulu Beach is known as a 'secret beach' and one of the most beautiful/hardest to get to. This beach, also known as Red Sand Beach, is a must for any tourist! The beach is nestled in a cove that has a natural sea wall that calms the incoming waves. This beach is only accessible via a narrow and steep trail, so ditch the cycling cleats and bikes at the trailhead and slip on some walking shoes because this is one destination you don't want to miss.

If you don't want to go down to the beach, you can take it easy and follow the side trail just past the parking lot to a sea cliff view.

Hāna Beach Park

Highlight • Beach

This bayside park is a beautiful and popular spot where families, swimmers, and surfers enjoy the bay and black sandy beach, created after years of lava erosion from a nearby stream. There is a nice grassy area with picnic tables and restrooms here, with Hana Pier just off to the right. If you are here on the right day, you may see outrigger canoe racing, often practiced in the bay.

Hāna Highway

Highlight (Segment) • Waterfall

World renowned bike ride that will take your breath away. Over 700 elbow turns and hundreds of one lane bridges will spin your head. I chose to ride it counterclockwise as all the tourist traffic comes from opposite way, so you can freely enjoy the scenery. If you start 8am, you will be done by the time they start coming back. Be prepared for the rain as it is regular occurrence, every 30 minutes.
Enjoy and respect

Rodeo General Store

Highlight • Rest Area

This store is a great place to stop during a ride, with a wide selection of local foods, snacks and drinks. Here, you can grab a deli sandwich made to order to take with you or sit outside on the patio overlooking Makawao and enjoy several options, from a fantastic Acai bowl with granola and berries, fresh ahi poke, delicious ice cream, gelato, Kombucha, and Kona coffee.
