Westthorpe Hills

Highlight • Natural

Westthorpe Colliery - opened when the first sod was cut on 17th March 1923 and subsequently closed formally on 31st March 1984, ceasing to produce coal seven weeks prior to this.

When the pit was nationalised in 1947 it employed just shy of 1,000 workers. Work to return the site to nature began in 1997 and is now Westthorpe Hills.

There's a flight of steps where you will have to carry the bike down to reach the Trans Pennine Trail. It is not difficult to get down these steps

Lowered into place on October 21st 2024 This magnificent structure is 38 metres long and weighs about 40 tons.

It replaces a brick bridge on what was originally the Great Central Railway and creates a direct route between Staveley and the Trans Pennine Trail as part of the Chesterfield Canal Restoration
