Description
If you're considering the Upper JEM Trail – Jem Trail (South) loop from Sheep Bridge Nature Preserve for touring cycling, be warned: this 13.4 miles (21.5 km) route, with 862 feet (263 metres) of elevation gain and an estimated duration of 2 hours and 7 minutes, is rated moderate, but that's for mountain bikers. For touring cyclists, especially with loaded bags, the main JEM Trail is largely unsuitable, making this a challenging proposition unless you stick to specific dirt roads.
What to expect on Upper JEM Trail – Jem Trail (South) loop from Sheep Bridge Nature Preserve
The region offers stunning desert landscapes, with views of numerous surrounding mesas, the Virgin River, and the iconic sandstone towers of Zion National Park. You'll pass through sprawling sagebrush and washes, with a chance to spot wildlife like rabbits and lizards. However, the core JEM Trail is predominantly singletrack, featuring technical sections and one-way downhill designations that are designed for mountain bikes, not touring bikes. If you plan to tour here, you'll need to carefully craft a route using only the JEM Doubletrack and other dirt roads, as the singletrack would be difficult to impassable with a loaded touring setup.
Planning your visit
Access to the area from Sheep Bridge Nature Preserve is generally not permitted for bikers, with parking and trails within the preserve designated for walking only. Mountain bikers are now directed to designated BLM trailheads further south on Sheep Bridge Road. Given the unsuitability of the main JEM Trail for touring cycling, it's crucial to plan your route meticulously, focusing on the JEM Doubletrack and other gravel/dirt roads. Always carry ample water, especially during warmer months, as the desert environment can be unforgiving.
