The first third of the path is partly signposted as the Cretean Way, but not necessarily easy to find without a satnav. The descent is marked red and white throughout, but it is rocky and steep on the right.

Mount Giouchtas, above the village of Archanes, has been a sacred site for the entire island of Crete since ancient times. According to mythology, the mountain's human-head-like shape is the head of the god Zeus, who is buried there. From the summit of Giouchtas, one has astonishing and unobstructed views in all directions.
