What to expect on Slickrock Trailhead – Slickrock Practice Loop loop from Slickrock Trail Parking
This trail offers a fascinating journey across its namesake "slickrock" surface, which is actually petrified Navajo Sandstone providing surprisingly good grip underfoot. You'll navigate a constantly undulating path, featuring a never-ending series of short but incredibly steep climbs and descents, along with occasional sand traps and natural step stairs. The uneven terrain requires attention to footing, but your efforts are rewarded with expansive views of the rugged red rock landscape. Look out for distant vistas of Arches National Park to the north and the snow-capped La Sal Mountains to the east, and don't miss the closer look into a box canyon from the Echo Canyon viewpoint. This route is a fantastic introduction to the region's unique topography for hikers prepared for continuous ups and downs.
Planning your visit
The Slickrock Practice Loop is located within the Sand Flats Recreation Area, easily accessible from Moab. There's a large parking area and restrooms available at the trailhead. Be aware that a day-use fee is required to enter the recreation area. This is a multi-use trail, popular with mountain bikers and even motorcycles, so hikers should be mindful and yield right of way to bikers. While dogs are allowed, the harsh sandstone surface can be tough on their paws, so bringing extra water for them is highly recommended.
