Gibside Estate – National Trust Georgian Landscape Garden

Highlight • Historical Site

The 600-acre Gibside Estate was built between 1603 and 1620. It's an excellent example of a landscaped Georgian garden with some areas achieving SSSI status.
The house was left empty in 1920 and partly demolished - the shell is now a listed building on the property in danger list.
The National Trust owns and manages the house and garden now. It's paid entry unless you're a NT member.

Column of Liberty

Highlight • Historical Site

The Column of British Liberty which is now normally known as the Column of Liberty was built in the 1750's by Sir George Bowes reflecting his liberal politics.
You can see the column from several places while running around the estate. It stands high on a steep hill and is visited by several trails so it's a good place to pause and enjoy the view.
