Smardale Lime Kilns

Highlight • Historical Site

There were two kilns here in the 19th century and related engine house and railway structures, according to Historic England. The connection to the railway is rather - visibly - obvious as Smardale Gill Viaduct is just next door to the kilns.

Smardale Bridge

Highlight • Natural Monument

A beautiful and Grade-II listed stone bridge over Scandal Beck. The track running over it is almost completely grassy, adding to its charm. Worth stopping here for a bit of peace and calm.

This is an interesting area for walking and this initiative is actually working on conservation and conservation.

You won't usually see many people, even on a public holiday in the sunshine. Just a marvellous spot with a very technical climb - just watch out for the hawthorn trees!

St Oswald's Church, Ravenstonedale

Highlight • Historical Site

St Oswald's is a Grade-I listed building. This church was built in 1738. It has a very beautiful Georgian interior, including a 3-tiered pulpit and inward facing oak pews. The church has a memorial window commemorating Elizabeth Gaunt. She was the last woman to be burnt at Tyburn for her faith. (Tyburn used to be a major execution site for prisoners in the London area.)
