Stone Gruhe on the Römerstraße (Resting Bench Jägerhaus Esslingen)

Generally they are called resting or resting benches. The majority, mostly made of natural stone, come from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. They were only set up in northern Alsace and the Neckarland, where they can still be found in places today.

Especially for the rural women from the Fildern, who carried their products to the Stuttgart market, the benches were a simple but very ingenious piece of furniture. Baskets from the head, butten and reefs from the back, sacks and jugs from the hands, could be put down at the appropriate height and easily picked up again after resting. The Steinerne Gruhen are now a listed building.
