The Twelve Apostles are a striking rock formation east of Solnhofen in the Altmühl Valley – twelve freestanding dolomite towers made of sponge algae limestone, relics of a tropical Jurassic Sea reef from around 150 million years ago. They rise steeply above the Altmühl River on the southwest-facing slope and vary in color from ivory white to gray-yellow to green-gray.
