The old Walser village of Splügen is nestled beautifully in the Rheinwald valley. It has retained much of its original charm, being more of a transit place than a major tourist destination. Despite this, it offers a good range of accommodation options and restaurants. It also has a quiet campsite.
If you're already here, you should definitely try Capuns - the Graubünden specialty made of spaetzle dough wrapped in chard leaves. Delicious!

Splügen

Highlight • Settlement

The southern Swiss town of Splügen was and is a typical mountain pass village. Then as now, merchants, artists and tourists stopped here before continuing on their way north or south. Before the construction of the Bernardino and Gotthard tunnels, the Splügen Pass was the only direct transfer route to the south. Old warehouses and customs posts still characterize the times of yesteryear.

You can live particularly peacefully and eat very, very well in the “Hotel Bodenhaus”. It is rumored that Napoleon, Queen Victoria and Albert lived here. More information: hotel-bodenhaus.ch.

Follow Splügen

Highlight • Rest Area

They produce excellent dairy products themselves. Yes, they are a bit more expensive, but I saw them also working on Sundays. It is a kind of cooperation and the cheeses they have there are simply to die for...

Gallery at the Splügen Pass / La Galleria from 1843
Historic avalanche gallery at the Splügen Pass
The historic avalanche gallery on the north side of the Splügen Pass was completed in 1843 and made it possible to keep it open in winter even in critical conditions. After the Second World War, the Splügen remained closed during the winter months and the gallery was bypassed with a summer road. The gallery has been restored in recent years with a restoration project so that at least hikers can use it again safely.
