In 1983 Athletic was proclaimed League champion for the seventh time in its history and it was a highly desired moment to celebrate it in style. At that time, Pedro Aurtenetxea was president of the club, and a member of its board, Cecilio Gerrikabeitia, inspired by a song: “A barge was coming down the Nervión River…” was the one who had the idea of going up the estuary to aboard a barge. Since then, Gabarra No. 1 was renamed Gabarra Athletic, and became a symbol of red-and-white triumphs.

In this way, on May 3, 1983, the champion Athletic players aboard the barge sailed up the estuary from its mouth in Getxo to Bilbao City Hall. It is said that nearly 1,000,000 people on both sides of the estuary cheered the departure of the barge pulled by the tugboat Amaya, and accompanied by Bizkaia trawlers.

Only one year later, in the 1983/84 season, the lions returned to the estuary to celebrate another tremendous triumph. On this occasion, the Copa del Rey was added to the League championship and automatically the Spanish Super Cup. The images from the previous year were not only repeated but surpassed, turning the Athletic Gabarra into the symbol of the red-and-white victories.

This sculpture by Ángel Garraza, located between the Euskalduna Palace Conference Centre and the Deusto Bridge, consists of two pieces of compact concrete covered with ceramic tiles, in the shape of two kaikus, the wooden jars that were once used on Basque farms to boil milk or make cheese. The artist has transformed them into gigantic shapes and made them solid, covering them with repeating circles like a skin, energizing the sense of volume.

In 1992, a public competition was held for the construction of a music and congress centre in Bilbao. The winning design was by architects Federico Soriano and Dolores Palacios. The architects attempted to reflect a ship under construction in their design. Construction began in 1994 and it was officially opened in February 1999.
