Saint Lawrence / “San LORENZO”, to whom this monastery church in San Severo is dedicated, is one of the early Christian martyrs from a time when Christianity was still forbidden. He was the Pope's archdeacon and was asked by the pagan emperor Valerian to hand over the church's treasure. Lawrence asked for three days, during which time he distributed the church assets among the poor inhabitants of Rome and, after the agreed time, came to the emperor with the poor to present them to him as the treasure of the church.
He was then martyred to death, the legend says that he was roasted alive on a grate - this attribute can be seen in many depictions of Saint Lawrence - over coals. He is said to have been in good spirits and told his executioner on the one hand whether he wanted to turn him around.
The feast day of San Lorenzo/Saint Lawrence in the calendar of saints is August 10th.

The Chiesa della Santissima Trinita dei Padri Celestini is the Baroque church on Piazza della Republica and forms a structural unit with the adjacent former Celestinian monastery, which today houses the town hall, Palazzo Celestini.
The facade is a masterful example of 18th-century Neapolitan Baroque with elegant curved lines. The bell gable consists of a rare flat campanile a vela, which was typical of certain mendicant orders. The single-nave interior is richly decorated with marble altars and valuable paintings

Church of Saint John the Baptist

Highlight • Religious Site

Saint John the Baptist (San Giovanni Battista), to whom this church was dedicated, is - like Saint Joseph - a man on the threshold of the Old and New Testaments. His parents are Zechariah and Elisabeth. After the proclamation of God's incarnation, the Mother of God visits her relative Elisabeth, who will give birth to a son in old age, John the Baptist. This is half a year older than Jesus and is considered his forerunner / pioneer. He lives in the desert, preaches the repentance of sins to the Jewish population and baptizes them in the Jordan, where Jesus also comes to be baptized, being filled with the Holy Spirit that descends on him from heaven.
The commemoration day of San Giovanni Battista in the calendar of saints is on June 24th, exactly half a year before 'Christmas Eve'.
