Hermitage of Our Lady of the Arenes

Highlight • Religious Site

It is a Romanesque building with a single nave with a semicircular apse without external decoration. It has large buttresses on the south façade, where the old access to the temple is located, a door with a round arch that is currently walled up. Attached to the north wall is the house of the hermits, built much later and with a roof that slopes towards the church, breaking the aesthetic harmony.
The Chapel of the Virgen de Las Arenas is located at the foot of the Sant Llorenç de Munt mountain, in the eastern part, and on the right side of the River Ripoll. The place of Las Arenas is already mentioned in documents from the 10th century and was therefore part of the parish of Sant Feliu del Racó.

The Puig de la Creu is a 668-meter mountain in Castellar del Vallès, which can be easily climbed to the top. From several points of the route there are good views of the Vallès Occidental, Collserola and Montseny.

It offers a complete perspective of the region, with views of the San Lorenzo massif and also of Montserrat, and there is a group of buildings, and among them the hermitage of Santa María del Monte de la Cruz. The ensemble, with an irregular shape similar to a pentagon, develops around a central courtyard.

The 12th century Romanesque chapel is the oldest building in the whole complex. It is a rural chapel without ornamentation that is dedicated to Santa María (de la Cruz), the Virgin of Sorrows.

A somewhat demanding route due to the accumulated difference in level, which is concentrated in the first 30 km. It runs along forest tracks in good condition except for a section of path before reaching the Ermita de les Arenes.
