What to expect on Assabet River Rail Trail – Assabet River Rail Trail loop from Hudson
This route takes you on a diverse journey, primarily along a smooth, paved asphalt surface that's perfect for road bikes. You'll glide past tranquil river views, through wetlands, and into refreshing forests, with glimpses of open spaces and historic New England towns. Keep an eye out for the restored 1921 Boston and Maine Railroad blue caboose near Hudson, and enjoy excellent river views as you cross a trestle 40 feet above the Assabet River. While much of the trail is flat and easy, be aware of a 1.9 to 2-mile section within the Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge that is unpaved dirt and gravel; road bikes can navigate it with care, but a hybrid or mountain bike would be more comfortable here. This trail is well-suited for cyclists of all fitness levels looking for a scenic and mostly gentle ride.
Planning your visit
The trail's connection to multiple communities, including Hudson, means you'll find plenty of opportunities to stop for breaks, grab coffee, or explore local shops, especially as the southern section passes through the eastern end of Hudson's downtown. It's worth noting there's a 2-mile section between Sudbury Road and the trailhead in Hudson that is currently closed due to private land. The trail offers unique perspectives in every season, with lush greenery in spring and vibrant foliage in autumn, making these excellent times to visit.
