Description
If you're looking for a challenging mountain biking adventure in West Whittier, the Schabarum Trail – Schabarum Trail loop delivers. This difficult 23.2-mile (37.3 km) route packs in 3496 feet (1066 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 3 hours and 47 minutes to complete. It's best suited for riders with very good fitness and advanced skills, though some sections are accessible to all skill levels, making it a rewarding day out for those ready for a varied ride.
What to expect on Schabarum Trail – Schabarum Trail loop from West Whittier
This loop takes you on a journey through diverse landscapes, from rolling hills and chaparral-covered hills to serene oak woodlands and expansive green spaces. The terrain under your tires will constantly change, encompassing off-road dirt paths, wide doubletrack, and even some paved sections. While the initial part of the trail is generally an easy, wide doubletrack, it quickly transitions to more intermediate terrain with challenging 10-15% grades and ruts. As you climb higher, expect loose and sandy fields, and be prepared for some tighter, steeper switchbacks on descents, particularly towards Amar, after enjoying a wide singletrack with an easy climb and switchbacks between Grand and Country Hollow. Along the way, you'll be treated to amazing views, including vistas of Hacienda Heights, and the natural beauty of the surrounding chaparral and oak trees.
Planning your visit
The Schabarum Trail loop is part of the extensive Schabarum-Skyline Trail system, which connects communities and offers access to other trails within areas like the Peter F. Schabarum Regional Park. Be aware that some older sections of the trail feature unique design elements, like telephone poles at entrance gates, which are relics from a different era of bike trail design. While specific parking and public transport details are not highlighted, planning for adequate water, especially on warmer days, is always a good idea for a ride of this duration and difficulty.
