Location of Watersportbaan Vlaanderen. Many national and international championships are organized here every year. This water sports course has a very good reputation. The length of the pond is more than 2 km.
Origin of the water puddle? In the sixties, last century, sand was mined here to dump old clay pits in Rivierenland. Due to strong protest from local residents, the sand extraction has been stopped and the flooded well has been given a recreational destination.

Mechelen artist Gijs Vanhee painted the boring concrete wall near the entrance to the sports center in his characteristic style. “It was an idea from one of our employees. We have a working group on experience within the center. They think about things that can improve the image of Hazewinkel. As soon as you enter here, you immediately look at a boring concrete wall of 25 meters long. We initially had the idea of hanging photo frames there, but the wall is actually ideal for graffiti. That's how we came into contact with Gijs. Of course we wanted a drawing that also included water sports. Moreover, we also want to integrate a real climbing wall into the mural. It already looks promising,” Lobbestael explains.

“I came to look at the wall. It's a huge thing. I also wanted to keep some of the concrete. It was a challenge because in recent years I have worked almost exclusively in black and white,” says Gijs Vanhee. “Here they wanted colors and also a climbing wall that had to fit into the drawing. I try to represent Hazewinkel in my own way. There is also some kind of monster in the water.
