Stratfield Saye House

Highlight • Historical Site

Home of the Dukes of Wellington since 1817, Stratfield Saye House has a unique collection of paintings, furniture and personal effects of the Great Duke, including his magnificent funeral carriage, military regalia and campaign trophies.

Stratfield Saye House sits within the Wellington Estate which is also home to equestrian facilities at Wellington Riding, family activities at Wellington Country Park and top quality local produce at the Wellington Farm Shop.

The Iron Duke Pub

Highlight • Pub

***Update October 2025 - After about 18 months of closure it's back! Only open on Sundays and Wednesdays at the moment (also Bank Holidays), but it's back nonetheless.***

Friendly country pub.

Has a drinking water tap in the garden and barman was keen to let me know that they're happy for this to be used out of hours. Probably best not to take the p!ss, but good to know.

St Mary the Virgin Church, Beech Hill

Highlight • Historical Site

Idyllic church on the corner of Beech Hill Road and Grazeley Road on National Cycle Network Route 23 (sustrans.org.uk/find-a-route-on-the-national-cycle-network/route-23/) - thanks to the imposing trees at the corner of the road this is a perfect spot for a bit of rest in the shade on warm Summer days.

This house, called "Filmers", sports the mural of a "257 Squadron" steam engine on its double garage door.
The painter is Brian Matravers.

Climb to Farley Hill

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

This is a nice little climb through the woods which averages around 5-6% gradient and is relatively traffic-free.
Autumn colours and the early afternoon silence made this one of the notable highlights of my tour.
