Grundtvig's Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The church is a monument to N.F.S. Grundtvig been built. The design for the church is by the architect Peder Vilhelm Jensen Klint (1853-1930). When he died, the church was far from finished and his son architect Kaare Klint (1888-1954) took over the continuation of the work. The son of Kaare Klin, Esben Klint (1915-1969) was the third of the Klint family, who carried out the last work on the church.
The foundation stone was laid on Grundtvigs birthday 8.9.1921. The tower was inaugurated as a temporary church on 11.12.1927. In the spring of 1928 work began on the nave and the crypt. The construction work was completed on 8.9.1940.
According to Jensen Klint, the typical Danish village church is the mother of the Grundtvigs church.
For the walls, ordinary white-yellow bricks were used, which were fired in the brickworks in Blovstrød (north of Copenhagen) and Ruds Vedby (West Zealand).
The special association of 10 stones, which gives the Mauerwekr its quiet surface, was designed by Jensen Klint. The roof is made of typical red Zeigel.
The relation to the Gothic city churches and the European cathedrals is also clear.
The really special thing about the Grundtvigs church is the maxim of the builder that all parts of the church should be of exceptional quality. So today bricklayer apprentices visit the church to be impressed by the craftsmanship of the builders of the church.
The tower of the church is 49 meters high, the nave measures 30 meters to the ridge. The length is 76 meters and the width 35 meters.
