San Bastian Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Chappella / San Bastian Chapel, Zernez
The founding date under the patron saint of Saint Sebastian (in Valader «Bastian») is obscure. The chancel covered by a star vault with late Gothic wall paintings by a master who may have come from the Tyrol and the ribbed vaulting of the nave were built in 1490 before the Reformation.
After the devastation of the Graubünden turmoil, the church was deconsecrated for sacred use in 1643. It was not restored until 1949-52, and the building was then used again for religious services.
In June 2012, the Grisons Synod celebrated its 475th anniversary in Zernez. San Bastian was the place of public synodal negotiations.

Baselia / Evangelical Church of San Mauritius, Zernez
The preserved Romanesque tower is evidence of a medieval predecessor of the current, early Baroque complex. The patronage of St. Mauritius is recorded in the 15th century. Knight Rudolf von Planta donated a new building, the shell of which was built in 1607 and completed in 1609.
The interior of the church features stucco work in the early Baroque style, which is unusual for Graubünden, mainly with richly decorated fruit motifs. In the choir there is a communion table from 1725, around which there are several epitaphs of important Zernez families. The organ from 1741 with a three-part facade stands on a gallery above the choir, which dates back to 1741/1742. The smaller San Bastian church is located right next to it.

Wildenberg Castle in Zernez

Highlight • Castle

Chastè / Castle Planta Von Wildenberg
The castle stands majestically on the plain below the church hill and marks the transition to the old part of the village of Runatsch. Only the square tower reminds of times long past. This medieval residential tower was probably built around 1280 and was the property of the Planta-Wildenberg family. The unpopular lord of the castle, Rudolf von Planta, had executions carried out as a statutory judge, which the population resented. Suspected of sympathizing with the Catholics, he was ostracized by the court in 1618 and sentenced to death in absentia. Led by his opponent Baptista von Salis, the Engadine devastated his castle, but he fled. In 1627 he became Austrian captain and ruled again in Zernez, to the chagrin of the inhabitants, who had to rebuild it. Over the centuries there have been many changes of ownership: from the bishop of Chur, Conrad Planta from Zuoz, knight Rudolf von Planta, the Bezzola and Hemmi families to the municipality of Zernez.
