Giuseppe Piermarini Monument

Highlight • Monument

The city of Foligno is home to a modern monument dedicated to architect Giuseppe Piermarini, created by sculptor Ivan Theimer and located in Piazza Giuseppe Piermarini, behind the former theater named after him. The bronze work depicts Hercules symbolically holding time and history, thus celebrating the greatness and cultural legacy of the celebrated architect. Piermarini, born in Foligno in 1734, is best known for designing Milan's Teatro alla Scala and for his contribution to 18th-century Italian neoclassical architecture.

Santa Maria Infraportas Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The church, among the oldest in Foligno, stands on the western side of Piazza San Domenico, where there was an 8th century chapel dedicated to the Assumption, Saint Peter and Saint Paul.
There is information that in 1087 the hospital of Santa Maria was annexed to it.
The construction of the Romanesque church took place in the 12th century, the original chapel was incorporated into the left nave.
The façade in bands of white and pink stone is the result of an unfortunate nineteenth-century rearrangement which reused elements of a previous rose window to create a mullioned window, not proportionate to the façade; it is preceded by a small portico, also rebuilt in the 19th century, reusing columns and capitals from the 11th or 12th century.
To the right of the portico there is an aedicule dating back to 1480 with a sketch of a fresco of Sant'Anna attributable to Mezzastris; at the end of the right side is the Romanesque bell tower.

Piazza Garibaldi is one of the main squares in Foligno's historic center, characterized by a large open space that serves as the hub of city life. Its sides are lined with historic and secular buildings, including two highly significant churches: the Church of the Santissimo Salvatore, of medieval origin with a stone façade and Gothic portals, and the Church of Sant'Agostino, remodeled in the 18th century, which now also houses the sanctuary of the Madonna del Pianto. The combination of the square and its buildings gives the place a strong historical and religious character.

The monument dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi is located in Piazza della Repubblica in Foligno and commemorates the event of 1205/1206, when the young Francis sold his father's fabrics and his horse to raise money for the restoration of the church of San Damiano, thus beginning his religious vocation. The work, designed by architect Pietro Battoni, is cast in bronze and installed on the façade of a historic building. Two hands emerge from the stone to symbolically offer the fabrics sold by the saint, evoking the gesture of renunciation of material goods and the beginning of a spiritual journey.

Piazza Don Minzoni is an open, bright urban space nestled in the heart of Foligno's medieval center. At the center of the square is a modern fountain with simple lines that organizes the space and serves as its visual focal point. The church of Sant'Apollinare overlooks the square, one of the oldest in the city, whose medieval origins reinforce the site's historic character. Named after Don Giovanni Minzoni, the square today combines a civic and commemorative function with the daily life of the historic center.
