San Materno Church (Chiesa di San Materno), Maccagno Superiore

Highlight • Religious Site

Chiesa Parrocchia S.S. Stefano and Materno, Maccagno
Today it is known simply as the Church of San Materno or the Parish Church of Maccagno Superiore.
But if we go to rediscover the roots of this sacred building, we find traces of an important past that deserves to be remembered.
Begun shortly before Federico Borromeo's visit (1596), construction was slow. In 1683 it still had no bell tower and the facade had not yet been plastered. During the '700 it was still decorated internally. An inscription preserved in the church reminds him of "Materno sacrata excellentori sculpur ornata - 1715" and some frescoes that once existed on the vault bore the date October 12, 1720.
The church is in the shape of a Latin cross. It includes a very large and high central nave and three chapels on each side, of which the middle one is the largest. The facade, once much further back than the current one, was built in 1877 with the proceeds from the sale of the house that leaned against the church of S. Antonio. The design of the facade is a variety of architectural orders, from neoclassicism to the Renaissance. However, its lines are harmonious and elegant. The churchyard in front of it was not built until 1875.
The interior of the church is rich, collected and impressive. The light raining from above creates strange effects of shadows and the mystical silence that reigns there induces a deep memory.

Forcora Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The distinctively scenic beauty of the Forcora Pass, not far from the Swiss border, attracted many sports fans and skiers in the thirties. Even today you can ski here in the winter season, as long as the snow conditions permit.
The green meadows of the Forcora Pass are also prized for their breathtaking views of the valleys around Luino and for a stopover in the clear air on a hike in this delightful setting. The Forcora Pass can be reached by car via a navigable panoramic road that branches off from Maccagno. At the top of the pass there is a large, comfortable car park, where coaches can also be parked.

Super great serpentines, some with 180 degree bends.
Very little car traffic.
Some short steep climbs, but mostly still easy to ride, depending on the activity
