Description

The Wave loop from Coyote Buttes North is a truly unique hiking experience, rated easy by Komoot, yet demanding in its own way. This 4.1-mile (6.5 km) route, with 568 feet (173 metres) of elevation gain, typically takes around 1 hour and 54 minutes to complete. It's an unparalleled adventure for those seeking geological wonders and a profound sense of discovery in a remote wilderness.

What to expect on The Wave loop from Coyote Buttes North

Prepare for an otherworldly journey across varied terrain, including sandy washes, rocky slopes, and slick rock. The highlight, "The Wave" itself, is a surreal sandstone formation with undulating patterns and vibrant striations of red, orange, yellow, and pink Navajo sandstone. Beyond this iconic landmark, you'll discover multi-colored sandstone walls and stark desert landscapes. While the physical exertion might be considered easy, the route demands strong navigation skills as there are no marked trails. This makes it ideal for experienced hikers comfortable with route-finding in undeveloped areas.

Planning your visit

Access to this fragile area is strictly limited through a highly competitive lottery permit system, allowing only 64 people per day. The road to the Wire Pass Trailhead is unpaved and minimally maintained; a high-clearance vehicle is recommended, and 4WD may be necessary after rain or snow. There are no water sources along the trail, so you must carry at least one gallon of water per person, especially given the extreme heat and sun exposure from May to September.
