Description
If you're looking for an easy, high-payoff coastal stroll on Maui's North Shore, the Baldwin Beach loop from Paia Secret Beach is definitely worth your time. This easy 2.2-mile (3.6 km) hiking route involves a minimal 27 feet (8 metres) of elevation gain, taking roughly 54 minutes to complete. It's a perfect choice for families or anyone seeking a relaxed beach walk with diverse scenery.
What to expect on Baldwin Beach loop from Paia Secret Beach
This route offers a delightful journey along the coast, transitioning from the wide, golden-white sands of Baldwin Beach to the more secluded, tropically-colored waters of Paia Secret Beach. You'll enjoy sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and, on clear days, the distant West Maui Mountains. The path connecting the two beaches often follows a well-worn trail along a sea-wall or through a small, sparse wooded area, adding variety to the sandy terrain. Paia Secret Beach itself is characterized by its unique shoreline, punctuated by lava rocks and lined with sparse vegetation rather than typical swaying palms. The walk is generally considered easy, making it suitable for leisurely strolls and families, especially with the reef-protected tide pool at Baldwin's western end, known as Baby Beach.
Planning your visit
Baldwin Beach Park is well-equipped for visitors, offering lifeguards, restrooms, showers, and picnic tables, making it a convenient starting point. While Paia Secret Beach offers a more secluded and relaxed atmosphere, it's worth noting its reputation as an unofficially clothing-optional beach towards the Kahului end. The dunes along Baldwin Beach hold cultural significance as an ancient Hawaiian burial site, so please be respectful of the area. On weekends, you might even catch local families fishing at Paia Secret Beach, adding to the authentic charm.
