The nature reserve - with its three artificial islands - was designed specifically for the needs of the birds so that they can rest in peace.

Lost City of Sandhagen

Highlight • Historical Site

North of Bagenkop lies the deserted village of Sandhagen, founded by farmers and fishermen in the mid-16th century. The town was situated on a sandy headland, hence the name Sandhagen. At some point later, however, the gradual migration to safer and more protected areas such as Bagenkop began. Sandhagen was eventually abandoned, and the remaining buildings fell into disrepair and were swallowed by the sea during storm surges. The settlement's existence was unknown for centuries until 1953, when stone floors and glazed clay pots were discovered during gravel mining. This led to archaeological excavations, and the remains of 18 houses were found. govisitlangeland.de/langeland/planen-sie-ihre-reise/die-im-meer-verlorene-stadt-sandhagen-gdk1147222
