Description

If you're seeking a peaceful, easy hike with a surprising payoff, the Laurel Valley County Park loop from out-of-date map is a fantastic choice. This 1.8-mile (3.0 km) hiking route is rated easy, with just 116 feet (35 metres) of climbing, and takes about 47 minutes to complete, making it perfect for a quick escape into nature or a family outing.

What to expect on Laurel Valley County Park loop from out-of-date map

Expect a journey through diverse terrain, starting with the park's distinctive "knob and kettle topography" of rolling hills and deep ravines. You'll pass a notable glacial erratic and walk among bracken fern, American beech, black locust, and oak trees. In June, the mountain laurels offer a lovely display of flowers. The highlight is undoubtedly the exquisite view of the Peconic Bay from a northeastern overlook, where you can also spot the Noyac Golf Course. While some portions are moderately hilly, the overall 1.8-mile (3.0 km) loop is suitable for all skill levels, offering an accessible nature experience.

Planning your visit

Planning your visit requires a bit of foresight regarding navigation. The park's network of trails, marked by diamond-shaped signs with different colored owls, can be confusing, and the map posted at the kiosk is stationary. To avoid navigation challenges, it is highly recommended to obtain an up-to-date map in advance. Early summer, especially June, is an excellent time to visit to catch the mountain laurels in bloom and enjoy the birdwatching opportunities.
