Bastion of the Mountain

Highlight • Monument

History
The bulwark of the Mountain, with that of San Tommaso, was built in the early sixteenth century using the earth obtained after the excavation of the outer moat of the walls for the erection of the Montagnone area.
The Montagnone, also called the Mountain of San Giorgio, in particular in the period of the duchy of Alfonso I d'Este was used as a military observation point and, mainly, as a privileged location for the powerful artillery of the Este seignory.
The triangle of the bulwark, which once housed gardens, was abandoned in later times to decay and the uncontrolled growth of vegetation. Only in the course of the twentieth century did it proceed, in different periods, to its recovery and enhancement.

Where the "Prospettiva" currently stands, there was a gateway to the city of Ferrara through the walls. It was built at the expense of the Municipality between 1703 and 1704 on a design by Francesco Mazzarelli. In the original project it was made up of three arches and decorated with marble coats of arms. It was transformed and enlarged with the addition of two side passages in the twentieth century, when the course was widened.

Bastion of San Tommaso

Highlight • Monument

History
It takes its name from the nearby church of San Tommaso (destroyed in 1836), located inside the walls at the intersection of the current via Sant'Andrea and Formignana.
With its typical "arrow" shape and without earlobes in the sides, the bulwark was built at the end of the second decade of the 16th century, when Duke Alfonso I d'Este (1476-1534) decided to strengthen the defensive apparatus of the south-eastern sector of the city.
