Maiden Castle hillfort

Highlight • Viewpoint

Maiden Castle is a stunning hillfort with huge ramparts. It affords breathtaking views over the Dorset. Built during the 1st century BC, it is one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe. Roughly the size of 50 football pitches, the fort would have protected hundreds of residents in its heyday. The site is in the care of English Heritage and is free to enter during reasonable daylight hours.

Maiden Castle Neolithic Monument

Highlight • Historical Site

Long before the Iron Age hillfort, Maiden Castle (often referred to as Maiden Hill) hosted two significant Neolithic monuments dating to 3500 BC. These include a causewayed enclosure—a ritual gathering place with concentric ditches—and a massive bank barrow stretching 546 meters. These earthworks represent some of Britain’s earliest monumental architecture, marking the site as a sacred landscape for millennia.
