Kalkberger Church Rüdersdorf

Highlight • Religious Site

The Kalkberg Church in Rüdersdorf was built from Rüdersdorf limestone from 1869 to 1873. The construction had become necessary because the village church in Alt Rüdersdorf had become too small. The design of the church building came from Friedrich August Stüler, one of the most talented Schinkel students.
Heavy storms, lightning strikes and the artillery bombardment of the Red Army in the last days of the war repeatedly led to destruction and damage. At the beginning of the 1990s, the necessary work on the tower was carried out and the main roof was re-covered from 2009 to 2012.
Incidentally, the tower is now said to have visibly leaned slightly to the north, which could be caused by long-term weather conditions and possibly also by blasting in the limestone open-cast mine.

Friday and Saturday: 12 noon to 10 p.m.

Woltersdorf Lock

Highlight • Structure

At the Woltersdorf lock it is possible to rent a raft and float in the surrounding waters. For a long time, the sluice served as a way of transporting the limestone and lime that was mined in Rüdersdorf by water.

Even today, some companies still use this route to transport their goods. Over the centuries, the lock has been expanded more and more in order to be able to cope with all the oncoming shipping traffic, including that in the leisure sector. It is about 65 meters long and eight and a half meters wide. A lock passage takes about 16 minutes.

Woltersdorf Historic Tram 87

Highlight • Historical Site

Wolterdorf is the smallest German municipality with a tram only 5.6 km long, making it one of the smallest tram companies in Germany.
The Gotha cars made during the GDR era are still used here. The opening was in May 1913.
