Levada Walk in Madeira Natural Park

Highlight • Trail

The Levada hike in Madeira Natural Park leads you along narrow irrigation channels through dense laurel forests and past moss-covered rock faces. Along the way, you'll enjoy spectacular views into deep valleys and across Madeira's verdant mountain landscape. The path is generally pleasant to walk, but requires sure-footedness and a head for heights in some narrow sections.

Levada do Norte

Highlight • Trail

The Levada do Norte is one of Madeira's sunniest levadas, meandering gently along the hillsides with sweeping views of villages, terraced fields, and the Atlantic Ocean. The well-maintained path leads you past eucalyptus trees, small gardens, and through short tunnels, always accompanied by the gentle murmur of the water. Thanks to its gentle gradient, this hike is ideal for leisurely walkers, but some exposed sections still require attention and sure footing.

From this picnic spot, you have a direct view of the rugged mountains of Madeira Natural Park, rising before you in lush greenery and steep rock faces. Between wisps of clouds, deep valleys, and sharp ridges, light and shadow constantly shift, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle. The tranquil setting invites you to linger and enjoy the mountain silence, the rustling of the wind, and the fresh mountain air.

Highlight • Viewpoint

Currently (Jan 2025) closed due to risk of rock falls, probably due to the recent forest fire.

View of Achada do Piquinho

Highlight • Viewpoint

Directly at the tunnel exit there is a great view of the valley at Achada do Piquinho.
Here you can prepare yourself for the 500 meter tunnel crossing or wait for oncoming traffic, as it is hardly possible to avoid it.

Waterfall in Madeira Natural Park

Highlight • Waterfall

The waterfall in Madeira Natural Park plunges in several cascades over moss-covered rocks into a pool surrounded by ferns and laurel trees. The constant roar of the water mingles with birdsong, creating an almost mystical atmosphere. You can take a break on the nearby rocks, feel the spray on your face, and experience the power of nature up close.

Waterfall on Levada do Norte

Highlight • Waterfall

Great way, well developed and secured. It goes through a tunnel, here necessarily take flashlight. Mobile Apps is absolute minumum. Tunnel is sometimes narrow and low, esp. At entry and exit. It is best hat off and backpack to the front. Otherwise, a very nice tour. After crossing the mountain can be completely different weather on the other side. Was the case with us. We were in the middle of the clouds.

Encumeada Tunnel

Highlight (Segment) • Structure

The tunnel Encumeada is about 800 meters long and in some places quite narrow and low. You should have a flashlight, I think the cell phone flashlight is not enough.
