In the early hours of the morning a freight train fully loaded with prisoners from Buchenwald, which the SS wanted to evacuate before the approaching Allies arrived, approached the small train station when an Allied air command attacked precisely this train. Damaged by the heavy fire, the locomotive could not continue and the train came to a halt in the station with several thousand prisoners. SS guards soldiers brutally rounded up the escaped prisoners. Two of them were shot and buried right at the loading ramp of the train station, their remains were not found until the 1960s.
Only after several hours full of fear and uncertainty in the narrow, dark wagons were the prisoners, closely guarded by the SS guards and their dogs, driven through the village towards Jena. Contemporary witnesses still speak of the unspeakably cruel sight of starving emaciated people in their striped suits and clattering wooden shoes on the dusty village street. Small children who were on their way to the butcher or the bakery in the village were dragged into the shops and watched the seemingly endless march of unfortunate people. A sight that they have not forgotten to this day.
