Busdorf Wall (Part of the Old City Wall)

Highlight • Historical Site

A section of the later city wall from the 11th/12th century still survives here. This city wall was later built around the village (Villa) Espethera, which previously lay outside the city gates of Paderborn. The Villa Espethera also includes the Busdorf Church and the monastery. Several beautiful old buildings have merged with the city wall and are still preserved.

Paderborn City Wall

Highlight • Historical Site

The city of Paderborn ([paːdɐˈbɔɐ̯n] play audio file) is a city with over 150,000 inhabitants in the eastern part of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located in the district of the same name and is its district town, is a university town, regional center and center of the Hochstift Paderborn region. The name refers to the sources of the Pader in today's city center.

Paderborn was first mentioned in a document in 777, when Charlemagne held a Reichstag and a missionary synod in Paderborn. The first Westphalian university was founded in Paderborn in 1614, which was later converted into an independent theological faculty. A new university was established in 1972; the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia was founded in 1971. The city has been the seat of a bishopric since the ninth century; this was raised to an archbishopric in 1930.

The city received its current borders through the integration of surrounding communities in the course of the local government reform in North Rhine-Westphalia in 1974, which made Paderborn a big city.

Today Paderborn is the 56th largest city in Germany.

On the square "An der Alten Synagoge" stands the Jewish memorial, made of yellow and red bricks, created by the Danish artist Per Kirkeby in 1993.
It commemorates the site of the synagogue destroyed during Kristallnacht in 1938 and the Jewish community subsequently wiped out in Paderborn.

St. Johannes Baptist Church (Dahl)

Highlight • Religious Site

The village of Dahl was first mentioned in documents in 1036. The first church made of stone was probably built in Dahl around 1150. The old church was extended several times, but at the beginning of the 18th century, the space was no longer sufficient for the now-grown population.
The parish church of St. Margaretha now has a 47m high church tower with a steep spire; Gothic pointed arch windows and a Gothic portal on the west side adorn the building. In 1867 a small sacristy was added, and in 1885 a second one was added to the north of the church. The former slate-covered gable roof was replaced by a roof made of tiles in 1935.
The cross-vaulted church was painted inside in 1870 by the artist Goldkuhle from Wiedenbrück in simple forms. The old altars from 1854 by the sculptor Hellweg from Paderborn, which showed the statue of the Madonna in the Gothic-style high altar as well as the statues of Saint Liborius and Saint Margaretha, also created by Goldkuhle in 1869, were replaced by new altars from 1912. In 1912, the new high altar, a gift from Josef Busch from Dahl, who lived on the farm next to the church, was built by the Braun company in Paderborn. The artist Goldkuhle provided the altar with a colored version.
The winged altar in neo-Gothic style shows biblical representations on its carved inner wings: the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, the multiplication of bread, the blessing of children and the Last Supper. During Lent and Advent, the wings are now closed to make it clear that all pomp should be avoided during these two liturgical seasons. Then the oil-painted pictures of St. Joseph, the medieval theologian Thomas von Aquin, the patron saint of the church, St. Margaretha, and St. Gertrude can be seen. A Sacred Heart statue stands in the turret above the tabernacle.
