In view of the memorial located here, which commemorates the victims of war and tyranny, I would like to offer the viewer a very brief excerpt from a remarkable speech given in 1985 by the then Federal President Richard Karl Freiherr von Weizsäcker (1920 to 2015):
+ "We learn from our own history what humans are capable of. Therefore, we must not imagine that we humans have now become different and better. There is no permanently achieved moral perfection – for no one and no country! We have learned as humans, we remain as humans endangered. But we have the strength to overcome dangers again and again. (...)"
Richard von Weizsäcker gave this speech, which attracted much attention at the time, on May 8, 1985, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and his words – even another 40 years later – are still relevant today.
