St. Anthony's Basilica

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Antoni Padewski in Rybnik - a church in the city center in Rybnik, built in the years 1903-1906. In 1993, Pope John Paul II gave the church the title of minor basilica. This basilica was one of the churches of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000. The temple is also often called the "Cathedral of Rybnik Region". It is the highest temple in Upper Silesia - the towers of the basilica are 95 meters high, which makes them visible from a distance, no matter from which side you enter Rybnik.

Rybnik Market Square

Highlight • Settlement

The name of the city refers to the pre-industrial period, when the inhabitants of Rybnik made their living mainly by fishing, and in the place of today's market square there was a large pond, Rybnik. The name derives from the Polish name meaning a pond intended for fish farming.
The town was first mentioned in the Latin document of Pope Gregory IX issued on May 26, 1230 in the currently used Polish form Rybnik in the fragment in Kozle castellaturam de Racziborz circa Rybnik. The Latin Liber fundationis episcopatus Vratislaviensis, written down in the years 1295–1305, lists the villages established under Polish law iure polonico, the present districts of Rybnik, which were absorbed by the city in urbanization processes, such as Gotartowice in the fragment of Gothartovitz decima solvitur more polon solvico, Boguszowice in the fragment Boguszowice more polonico, Chwałowice in the fragment of Chwalowitz solvitur decima more polonico and Kłokocin as Clocochina in the fragment of Clocochina decima more polonico.
Historical documents recorded as separate towns other present districts of the city: in 1228 Niedobczyce as Nedobcici, in 1531 Ochojec - Ochotzetz, in 1228 Chwałowice as Falevich and in 1305 Quelowicz, in 1532 Popielów as Popelaw, in 1614 Orzepowice Ożepowice.
In 1750, the name Rybnik was mentioned in Polish by Frederick II among other Silesian cities in an official order issued for the inhabitants of Silesia.

Rybnik Castle

Highlight • Castle

Castle in Rybnik - the former castle of the Silesian Piasts located in the city center of Rybnik. It has been rebuilt many times. Currently the seat of the District Court.
Although it is difficult to determine when the first castle in Rybnik was built, on the basis of archaeological research it can be stated that it was built at the end of the 13th century. However, it is believed that in the 12th century there was a wooden fortified stronghold in this place, erected during the reign of the Duke of Opole and Racibórz, Mieszko I Plątonogi . Initially, it was probably a wooden and earth structure. Since the later castle was small, its earlier wooden form probably was built on a rectangular or square plan with also small sides.
The first mention of the castle in Rybnik comes from 1327. Between 1202 and 1211, the princely couple (Mieszko and Ludmiła) brought to the castle the order of Norbertine sisters, who in the years 1223-1228 ran a school for noble maidens there. In 1228, the Norbertines left Rybnik, moving to Czarnowąsy near Opole.
During the period of regional disintegration, Rybnik first became part of the Racibórz Duchy, then of Opole and Racibórz (1202-1290), and then of the Racibórz Duchy again.
At that time, the castle consisted of a stone and brick house, built on a rectangular plan, with dimensions of 9.4 x 22.8 m, reinforced at the corners. It was still surrounded by earth embankments, and the ponds spilled around it were an additional defensive value. The castle did not have the character of a residence, but was a typical defensive structure with a permanent armed crew. In the fourteenth century, it was expanded.
