Description
If you're looking for an accessible and scenic outing in Somerset County, the Laurel Hill Lake loop from Laurel Hill State Park is an excellent choice. This easy hiking route covers 3.9 miles (6.3 km) with a gentle 235 feet (72 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete. It's a perfect family-friendly hike for those who want beautiful lake views without a strenuous climb.
What to expect on Laurel Hill Lake loop from Laurel Hill State Park
The loop offers a tale of two trails. The western side, primarily the Copper Kettle Trail, is flat, wide, and paved with crushed stone, making it very easy and suitable for strollers. Here, you'll enjoy pleasant, accessible views of Laurel Hill Lake, passing the park's beach and boat rental facilities. In contrast, the eastern side, known as the Lake Trail, presents a more rugged experience. While the overall loop is rated easy, this section is narrower, steeper, and can be slippery, with exposed roots and potential downed trees. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for this part, offering a bit more challenge and different perspectives of the lake through forested areas. It's a great option if you appreciate varied terrain within a single loop.
Planning your visit
You can start this loop from various points within Laurel Hill State Park, with ample parking available near the beach and boat rental area, which also serves as a good access point for the Copper Kettle Trail. The park is particularly beautiful in summer when ferns and flowers are in bloom and during autumn for vibrant fall foliage. While the trail is generally accessible, be aware that the Lake Trail section can be challenging, especially after rain, so plan your visit accordingly.
