Description
If you're looking for a serious challenge with big rewards, the Wild Horse Trail – Agua Tibia Mountain (1454m) loop from Dripping Springs Trailhead Parking is a difficult 16.6-mile (26.7 km) hiking route with a substantial 3276 feet (998 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 8 hours and 13 minutes to complete. This route is best suited for experienced hikers seeking a rugged, isolated wilderness experience away from the crowds.
What to expect on Wild Horse Trail – Agua Tibia Mountain (1454m) loop from Dripping Springs Trailhead Parking
The journey begins with a short walk through Dripping Springs Campground before you hit the Wild Horse Trail, which quickly ascends through switchbacks along the south canyon wall of Arroyo Seco Creek. While early sections offer shade from oaks and sycamores, much of the trail is exposed, especially on southerly slopes, so be prepared for sun. You'll navigate rocky inclines, rolling hills, and sandy dry creek beds, with the path becoming a steep, loose rock trail as you approach Wild Horse Peak. From higher elevations, you'll be treated to jaw-dropping scenery, including views of Vail Lake, Lake Skinner, the Temecula Valley vineyards, and even distant Mt. San Jacinto.
Planning your visit
This difficult loop demands good fitness and careful planning. The Agua Tibia Wilderness is known for extreme heat in summer, so plan your hike for the cooler seasons of fall or spring. Parking at the Dripping Springs Trailhead requires a Forest Adventure Pass or a day-use fee. Remember to carry plenty of water, as exposed sections can be very sunny, and dogs are permitted but must be kept on a leash.
