The statue of Thomas Paine was sculpted by Sir Charles Wheeler, President of the Royal Academy, and erected in 1964 in Thetford, Paine's birthplace.

Thetford Castle Hill Motte

Highlight • Castle

Thetford is one of the oldest settlements in Norfolk and is absolutely brimming with history. A perfect example is Castle Hill, a motte and bailey castle likely dating back to the 11th century. This castle was built by Roger Bigod to guard the town and the river crossing and would’ve taken considerable man-power and quarried earth to construct.

Today, this scheduled monument is immediately identifiable and its shape is steep and impressive. You’ll find steps leading to the top and can look over the earthen ramparts and over the Thetford.

Rather grand country pub and hotel in a nice location in very scenic Hingham. Maybe somewhere to look at rather than stop at if you’re on a ride.
