The first part of the route is a moderately steep climb on asphalt, and you do get a nice view of Merano. The descent is then relatively steep along forest paths. The final part, the highlight, is a relaxed walk along the Waalweg (Waal path), a dream come true! There's a great parking lot at the beginning.
