Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Highlight • Religious Site

The small parish church was built in the Baroque style from 1723 to 1730 and replaced a previous church that was demolished. The main facade is punctuated by slender Doric pilasters that give the facade greater height. Above it is an important cornice on which rests the curvilinear tympanum with lateral volutes. The facade is plastered and painted with different colors for the relief parts compared to the breakthroughs. The other facades and the bell tower are made of exposed brick. The floor plan consists of a single nave ending in a polygonal apse against which the wooden choir leans. In the nave there are two flat chapels on each side and pilasters with Corinthian capitals divide and decorate the interior of the church. Above the perimeter cornice, in accordance with the chapels, are semicircular windows that illuminate the nave.

The great bell tower that rises majestically next to the Church of Saint James the Great is barely reflected in the waters of the Po, which is barely a dam's width from the center of the small town.
This hamlet in the municipality of Bagnolo San Vito has had a difficult relationship over time with the great and well-loved watercourse that over the centuries has severely damaged it more than once by overflowing its banks.
Thus, at the end of the last century, the village was rebuilt almost entirely on land outside the watercourse, but was abandoned several times due to "flooding" after being closed after some land reclamation work between two main dams. Today these problems seem to be a thing of the past and the residents of this community not only live peacefully in this respect, but also in a community or "village" dimension that is very strong.
At the end of the village stands the large bell tower, flanked by the parish church, built in the Lombard Gothic style at the beginning of the 20th century and enriched in the 1950s with new marble and the new bell tower itself with a bell concerto in C major. More recently, a memorial to the fallen soldiers of all wars was erected in front of the church.
