François-Désiré Bancel is a French politician, born on February 12, 1822 in Lamastre (Ardèche) and died in the same place on January 23, 1871. He was born into a family from Vivarais who has given generations of lawyers since the XVIth century. His father, Sylvestre Bancel, is a lawyer in Valence (Drôme), president of the order, general councilor of Ardèche. After secondary studies at the Lycée de Tournon and law in Grenoble, then Paris, he became a lawyer in Valence. Republican, he participated in the 1848 revolution, and supported Cavaignac’s candidacy for the presidential election. He was elected republican deputy of Drôme on May 13, 1849. In particular opposing the deportation to the Marquesas of the leaders of the Lyon conspiracy, he denounced the policy of Napoleon III to such an extent that he was forced to go into exile in Brussels where he teaches literature and eloquence at the Free University of Brussels and founds a newspaper, Libre Recherche de Bruxelles. After his return to France, he was re-elected deputy of Paris in 1869. He was a fervent defender of the school which he saw as a source of tolerance. His bronze statue, by Paul Peyrouze, was erected in 1897 in front of the Valence train station. In 1942, it was removed to be melted down for the benefit of the German army. Stored in Paris, it is taken for a statue of Jean Bart and sent to Dunkirk. She returned to Valence in 1950, mutilated, and settled in 19801 near the Porte Neuve. Following the restoration of the boulevards, it returned to its original place in 2012. A boulevard in Valence and a street in Lyon bear his name.
