Church of San Giovanni in Montorfano

Highlight • Religious Site

It's easy to get up here by car, even if the route is narrow and characterized by serpentines. There is a small parking lot and a scenic hike starts from there

October 1, 2025,Mont'Orfano – round trip with beautiful views
We started the tour at the little campsite by the village of Mergozzo. There is a public parking opposite the campsite.
Very nice panoramic hike, steep uphill, rather leisurely downhill. But well, the technical data of the app is unfortunately not correct. The following applies: lowest point 200 m, summit cross 794 m, hiking time at a brisk pace 3.5 hours plus breaks. I started Komoot a little too late, because the hike naturally starts at the Verbania-Pallanza train station.

Very scenic and historical tour, difficulty in the climb equal to zero, as regards the descent a little more challenging if you have children, many steps and in some parts very steep but nothing that can not be done. Rating 7/10

A standard hike on Lake Mergozzo: Monte Orfano.
From my absolute favorite place Mergozzo, I first go along the Sentiero Azurro to Montorfano - a small place with the beautiful Romanesque church of San Giovanni Battista from the 12th century. The previous building dates back to the 7th century, the foundation walls of the old baptismal font can be viewed …

Nice itinerary, with departure and arrival in Mergozzo.
You go up from the old path that joins the military road, which with wide bends first leads to the old Polveriera, dug into the rock and still all in order (see here
), and then climb to the summit with a 360* panoramic view, especially of Lake Maggiore and Lake …

The first part of the route, the SENTIERO AZZURRO and the climb to the summit with a view of Lake Mergozzo and Lake Maggiore, would deserve the highest rating, 5 stars. The descent on the other side, with a view of factories, small factories and all the urban sprowl, with the constant noise of traffic on the streets and above …

Convenient parking in Mergozzo. Initially a very easy route that proceeds along Lake Mergozzo, then you climb towards the top of Mont'Orfano and things change (almost 600m of altitude difference on a typical hiking path). Advice: in this stretch do not follow the directions of the Komoot app (in the middle of the woods the GPS signal is weak) but …

August 23, 2024,Mont'Orfano – Rundtour
Wonderful but somewhat strenuous circular tour mainly in the chestnut forest at around 30°C.
The original name of the tour is "Climbing on Mont'Orfano", which corresponds to the ascent in sections.
