New Orleans Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

From 1983 to 2001, the Pioneer Bridge installed by the army formed the connection between Rossau and O-Dorf. In 2000, the city senate decided to rebuild the bridge. Originally there was even the idea of expanding and leaving the Pioneer Bridge. However, this option was soon discarded because the new bridge was to be traversed by the newly introduced T bus line. It was not possible for IVB buses to drive over the Pioneer Bridge. The bridge was therefore rebuilt, which was opened in October 2001 under the working title Bridge Roßau – Olympisches Dorf. With a municipal council resolution of June 20, 2002, the bridge was given the name "New Orleans Bridge". A special feature: This bridge is only open to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport.

Otto Neururer Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Otto Neururer was born on March 25, 1882 in Piller (Fliess parish). After his ordination in 1907 he worked as a cooperator in various Tyrolean places, for 14 years as a beneficiary at the provost church of St. Jakob in Innsbruck. In 1932 he was appointed pastor in Götzens and was an exemplary pastor in this community. In 1938 he was arrested by the Gestapo for persisting in the sanctity of Christian marriage. He was first taken to the Dachau concentration camp and then to the Buchenwald concentration camp. Here, too, he exercised his priestly ministry at great personal risk. When he administered the sacrament to an alleged candidate for baptism, Neururer was locked in the dreaded "bunker", hung upside down by his feet and thus cruelly tortured to death. On May 30, 1940, his death was reported. The urn was buried with great sympathy from the Tyrolean clergy and the population.
In 1977 a new memorial was erected to the left under the gallery of the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Götzens.
In 1996 Otto Neururer was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
From the Decree on Martyrdom: A glorious testimony of fidelity to truth, divine law and the Church was given by the priest Otto Neururer, following in the footsteps of the Good Shepherd, faithfully fulfilling his priestly duty and finally by defending the Christian Earned the crown of martyrdom for marriage and for exercising his priestly ministry among fellow inmates in the Buchenwald concentration camp.
