View of the Steinernes Meer

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Steinernes Meer is an impressive karst plateau between the Watzmann massif, Königssee, Hagengebirge, Hochkönigstock and Hochkalter massif. The largest massif of the Berchtesgaden Alps looks like a petrified sea with rolling, stony waves - hence the name Steinernes Meer.

Wonderful tour on the Stone Sea
near Saalfelden.😍👍
This stage of the Tauern Cycle Path is fantastic, very nice to cycle, well signposted.
We were lucky with the weather, even his majesty, the Hochkönig, was sometimes clearly seen, really mega👍😉

Day 2 of the Tauern Cycle Path. The weather holds up well until the early afternoon. Pretty cool though. Unfortunately heavy rain again in the last hour.
Shortly after Kaprun road closure due to high water. The alternative way very steeply up to the road.
Pretty bad signage for the cycle path through Zell am See. But then great bike …

Followed by St. Martin from the Tauern Cycle Path.
First visit to the Lamprechts Cave, one of the largest in Europe.
Continue to Maria Alm, a real highlight on the route.
In Zell am See for the obligatory Aperol Spritzer, with 6.50 new tour record 🤪.
Overnight stay in Bruck/Glocknerstrasse

The route from Zell via Maria Alm to Saalfelden leads through varied meadow landscapes with small towns and farmsteads. The view has room for width, but also for great views of the mountains. The further path through the narrow valley of the Salach leads over an interesting and well-prepared cycle path through forest areas, unfortunately always close to the road.

Spent morning in beautiful Zell am See then leisurely ride along the lake with stunning Steirnernes Meer in front. Another beautiful sunny day with breathtaking views.
Beautiful village of Maria Alm for midday coffee & snack, next to the church.
A great tour. Lots of nature, tranquility, not too strenuous but challenging in some places. A great way to finish. 👍

July 22, 2022,4. Etappe Tauerntour
After a day's break in Kaprun to explore the Krimml Waterfall, today we continue past Lake Zell with our Tauern Tour. With a detour to Maria Alm below the steinernen Meer.Das mountain panorama above the village is huge. From here, after a short break, we head to today's stage destination in St. Martin.

On my last stage it went up and down moderately, I chose the variant via Maria Alm, church worth seeing, and in the village of Almhöfe you can see beautiful old farms. My conclusion, the landscape of the Tauern Cycle Path is awesome, and I will definitely do it again, very recommendable
