St. Pölten Central Station

St. Pölten main station
The St. Pölten main station or St. Pölten station is a through station and railway junction in St. Pölten, Lower Austria. It is located on the Western Railway, which opened in 1858, and is the starting point for numerous railway lines.
After the decision to build the "Empress Elisabeth Western Railway" in 1851, the groundbreaking ceremony for St. Pölten main station took place on September 9, 1856. The construction of the station meant a significant change in the city's urban landscape. First, the Kremsertor had to make way for the station, and soon after, the entire city wall was demolished. Today's promenade was built in its place. Just two years later, the first trains were able to use the new stop. In 1877, the Leobersdorf - Kaumberg - St. Pölten (Traisentalbahn) railway line went into operation, followed eight years later by the lines to Krems and Tulln. After additional railway lines were connected, the previous building became too small, and from 1887, the current reception building with a passage to Kremser Landstraße was built over a two-year period. From 1898, the station was also the starting point of the later Mariazellerbahn, which was only extended to Mariazell in 1907 and electrified a few years later. The St. Pölten tram followed in 1911. The station was rebuilt several times over the years. In addition to the extensive renovations up to 1889, only makeshift renovations were carried out after the bombing raids in April 1945. It was not until 1965 to 1969 that the western part of the station was renovated and the historic corner pavilions replaced by functional buildings that still exist today.

St. Pölten Government District

Highlight • Monument

The Lower Austrian state government is located here, although looking at this building complex one might easily mistake it for the seat of the new world government, but the bureaucratic monster needs to be fed. In any case, the Traisental cycle path passes right by here.
