Rustic Bridge Over Bochtdijk

Highlight • Bridge

Description of De Haar, concrete bridge with fence over Bochtdijk

Description part 28: RUSTIC BRIDGE IN CONCRETE WITH FENCE OVER THE BOCHTDIJK. Large rustic BRUG over the Bochtdijk from around 1906 as a connection between the Noorder- and Zuiderpark, with concrete, cemented straight handrails with short straight uprights, between which are filled with imitation rustic branches. Straight plank, supported by straight and sloping imitation beams. Imitation wood grain and bark are drawn in concrete uprights, beams, railings and stuffing. Bridge has great ornamental value for the entire park layout and for the view from the Bochtdijk. The bridge was restored in 1997. On the north side of this bridge an ornamental wrought iron gate, probably dating from the same time. The ornamental cast-iron pillars on either side are crowned by a sphere. The fence is painted white and red. Appreciation The RUSTIC BRIDGE IN CONCRETE WITH FENCE OVER THE BOCHTDIJK is of cultural interest in the general interest because of: - the ornamental value; - the ensemble value; - the rarity value. Reformed Church Harmelen

Highlight • Religious Site

In the heart of Harmelen's village center stands the Dutch Reformed Church. The oldest predecessor of this church was likely founded around 1297, the year of its earliest mention. From 1288 until the Reformation, the church had ties to the Johanniter Order, which established a commandery in Harmelen. The church suffered fires and looting several times. As early as 1593, it was written, "The church was burned down here; but there, in it, a very suitable place has been created for preaching." In the Disaster Year of 1672, French troops wreaked havoc, and the great church fire on June 23, 1900, caused by a lightning strike, is well-known.

In 1753, the historian of the State of the United Netherlands noted that the church was equipped with "two elaborately constructed masonry columns on which the wooden vault rested." During the restoration work after the fire of 1900, the columns were replaced. They are constructed of brick alternating with sandstone, while the capitals and basements are made of red brick.
Incidentally, the restoration of the church after the great fire is due to the enthusiasm of the renowned architect P.J.H. Cuypers, who was working nearby at De Haar Castle at the time. Elements such as the entrance to the church and the stone balustrade around the church tower were his creation.
