For millennia, man has used the ancient mechanism of the waterwheel to fetch the water essential to life from the depths of the subsoil. In the middle of the 19th century, with the economic crisis linked to phylloxera, which cruelly hit the vineyards of our region, these machines, born at the dawn of human history, spread across the Vistre plain. Forty-five of these norias have been recorded in our commune. They allowed the development of onion cultivation, replacing vines, this crop requiring a regular and significant supply of water. With technical and scientific progress, these norias gradually disappeared from our landscape, to give way to modern watering systems. The restoration in 2004 of the noria of the Roman Aqueduct, unique in its kind, since she fetched water from the water table in the Roman aqueduct itself, is an exceptional curiosity of which the commune of Bezouce can, rightly, be proud.
