Description
If you're looking for a serious challenge that rewards you with epic Columbia River Gorge views, the Rowland Lake – Lower Labyrinth Falls loop from Mosier is a difficult gravel biking route that delivers. This 31.8-mile (51.2 km) adventure packs in 3414 feet (1040 metres) of climbing, taking around 3 hours and 42 minutes to complete. It's a perfect pick for experienced riders seeking a diverse and rugged day out, making it one of the more advanced gravel biking options in the area.
What to expect on Rowland Lake – Lower Labyrinth Falls loop from Mosier
Starting from Mosier, you'll likely begin on the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail, enjoying car-free sections and views through the Twin Tunnels. The route then crosses the Columbia River to the Washington side, where the real adventure begins on the Labyrinth Trail. Here, you'll navigate rocky, uneven sections past grand basalt outcroppings and Labyrinth Creek, leading to the scenic Lower Labyrinth Falls. Expect a significant 1,200-foot vertical climb on the Labyrinth Trail, making it best suited for advanced riders with robust gravel bikes or mountain bikes ready for chunky rock and exposed sections. The panoramic vistas of the Columbia River Gorge and Mount Hood are your hard-earned reward, offering some of the best landmarks and viewpoints on the loop.
Planning your visit
Given the challenging nature of this loop, especially the Labyrinth Trail's rocky sections, come prepared. You'll need an appropriate bike, such as a cyclocross, gravel, or mountain bike, equipped with robust tires (33C-40c or 29er-29+). Good physical fitness is essential for the substantial elevation gain and technical terrain. Carry sufficient water, as services may be limited on some segments, and be ready for exposed sections with little tree cover.
