Zeist Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

Zeist town hall has a long history behind it. The first town hall of Zeist was located in 1e Dorpsstraat. The municipality of Zeist grew steadily, which resulted in a lack of space. That is why in 1877 a new and larger town hall was realized in almost the same place on the Dorpsstraat.

The town hall from 1877, which served until 1909, is of architectural value due to its application of the neo-baroque style. On December 27, 1905, a competition was held for a design for a new town hall. The design by the 25-year-old architect Jan Stuivinga was awarded the first prize. This design was elaborated and in 1908 a whole new town hall on Het Rond was realized.

In October 1976 a fierce fire destroyed part of the town hall. The entire top floor went up in flames. In 1977 it was decided to start a new building at the same time as the restoration of the town hall. Design by architect J. Lengkeek, the construction of the new part of the town hall started in 1982 and completed in 1984.

Now the ideal setting for royal events, soaking up history or enjoying art and culture.

He started building a pleasure garden with the collaboration of the architects Jacob Roman, a Leiden city architect and later stadtholder architect, and Daniël Marot, a French Huguenot of international fame.

Sculpture Garden Slot Zeist

Highlight • Monument

There is a lot to discover not only within the castle itself, but also in the surrounding area. Since 2015, there has been a fascinating sculpture route that creates a connection between the Slot and the center of Zeist. Along this route you will find modern and contemporary works of art that embellish the Castle Garden, the driveway of the Castle, the Brother and Sister Square, the public hall of the town hall and the Walkart Park.
